Pointers for Parents

When should we schedule our first visit?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and our office recommend that your child visit the dentist by his/her first birthday. You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive. Your child should be informed of the visit and told that the dentist and his staff will explain all procedures and answer any questions. Please discuss the positive aspects of dentistry with your child. One way to convey good feelings about dental visits is to remind them that going to the dentist is a sign that they are growing up.

Helping your child prepare for their first visit…
It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as needle, shot, drill or hurt. Our office makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to children. Please do not tell your child that the “dentist will not hurt you,” as this may never have entered his or her mind. Instead, you can assure your child that the dentist and his helpers will be gentle and friendly.

All by myself…
If your child is four years old or older, you may want to consider allowing them to accompany our staff by themselves. We are all highly experienced in helping children overcome anxiety. Separation anxiety is not uncommon in children, so please try not to be concerned if your child exhibits some negative behavior. This is normal and will soon diminish. Studies and experience have shown that most children over the age of 3 react more positively when permitted to. Our purpose is to gain your child’s confidence and overcome any apprehension.
